The Birth of Christ Foretold to Mary: Luke 1:26-38

V. 26

It was the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, when Mary became pregnant.

V. 28

Gabriel spoke with Mary. Note that it is Luke that mentions the angel speaking to Mary. He pays attention to women, while Matthew avoids pointing out women. Again, Matthew does not want to upset his Jewish audience at the beginning of his evangelistic attempt.

V. 32

It was declared that Jesus was to be great, the Son of God, and the ruler.

V. 33

Here it is indicated that in the future Jesus’ earthly kingdom will be established forever.

V. 34

Note that people can speak to angels.

V. 34-35

Jesus is born of the Virgin Mary.

V. 36

Elizabeth and Mary were relatives and therefore, so was Jesus and John the Baptist.

V. 37

The angel points out the obvious after all this takes place; nothing is impossible with God.

V. 38

Consider what Mary was willing to endure to carry the Messiah in her womb. She could face ridicule for having a child out of wedlock, should anyone learn that Joseph did not cause her to be pregnant. She did not know if she would lose the trust of her husband or if here husband would leave her.
